Workshops:

There are so many aspects to playing a stringed instrument! We have decided to pick a few of what we think are the most important aspects in being able to be a well rounded string player in a 'spectrum' of styles.

Improvisation

Players will learn about the major/minor pentatonic and blues scales as the basis for improvisation. Many different improvisatory techniques for string players will be discussed and applied through the use of call and response exercises and solo improv opportunities within the orchestra pieces.

Building on the basics for a challenge to more advanced players, they will learn about the use of chord scales in improvising and within certain pieces, including the use of the seven modes. Chord scales will be used and players will practice their improvisation in the context of a 12-bar blues. Additional soloing ideas such as rhythmic density, spacing, dynamics, and articulation will be integrated into this class as exercises.

Fiddle styles & Ornamentation

Many different fiddle styles will be discussed and shown including Celtic (Cape Breton, Scottish, Irish), Old Time, American, Bluegrass, Appalaichan and Country. Within each style many of the same pieces can be shared but played totally differently using ornamentation. Rolls, trills, cuts, slurs, bowing patterns, chopping, and harmonization will be shown, discussed and applied to each style and instrument.

Contemporary rhythmic techniques will also be discussed and utilized as a device for beat creation in bluegrass and jazz music. Students will learn how to take beats from rock, R&B, and hip-hop music onto string instruments, and how these beats can be utilized as a tool for improvisation.

Performance & Practice

It is always important to learn how to practice effectively in order to be the best you can be in a performance. Ideas and practice techniqes/studies will be discussed and played in different genres.

Masterclass

Teachers may select players to perform for Ivonne and Ben and receive verbal critique and ideas to improve. Soloists or groups may also participate. Afterwards, questions and discussions are encouraged giving an exciting opportunity for players and teachers to ask Ivonne and Ben questions about music, career, life, and any other questions that arise!
